Invasion of Privacy II: Hacker’s Revenge

Posted on Monday, July 19, 2004 in Blogging

You might have noticed some on-and-off downtime over the past two weeks. Actually, you more likely noticed the new look-and-feel, to which I switched because of the following extenuating circumstances. It turns out that someone was able to upload some IRC bots and other hacking software to my MovableType archives directory, via old, unclosed comments. My hosting provider’s hosting provider (figure that one out) found the offending filez and promptly suspended my account. This was particularly frustrating because I am trying to apply for web design jobs, and one of the first things I do is send potential employers here to my website, which is supposed to double as my resumé, portfolio, and all-around employment portal.

I’m attributing the problems either to a security hole in MT, or else my own naiveté on the subject of directory permissions. Whichever the case, I am now powered by WordPress, preferable for these reasons:

  • It’s free.
  • It’s open source, which I like to encourage.
  • It’s written in PHP, which I know fairly well, so as to make “necessary changes.?
  • It’s got Matthew Thomas behind it’s user interface, so I knew it would be intuitive and easy to use. Notion since confirmed.

So … you may notice some occasional quirks in the site as I bring it up to speed. Mostly things like missing pages and occasionally less-than-perfect design. Rest assured, we will be back to normal soon … for all three of you readers. Good things are happening.

  1. Welcome back, snookiewookums.

Is it just me or does it say “URI” instead of “URL”?

Will be calling you soon and I want you to sing. :D

  2. Hey; looks pretty slick so far! You into 640×480 these days?

  3. Nice new design Daniel! Hope you’re having fun back in Baltimore.

  4. Oooo… now that I’m at home on the G5 I can see more of the goodies you have implimented on the site, the drop shadows, image-text replacement stuff, drop shadows, etc. And switching to WordPress. You’ve obviously been busy.

  5. Nice….I like this very much!

  6. Thank you all. Shannon: URI is the new URL. Doug: I don’t think it does fit in 640×480 … I just liked the width. :)
