Google SMS

Posted on Friday, October 8, 2004 in Internet

How cool is this? Now you can type stuff into your cell phone and SMS it to 46645 (GOOGL). Google SMS will return the search results directly to your phone.

Like if I’m in Ohio, for example, and I absolutely have to find a Starbucks, I can send:

starbucks dayton oh

And Google will return something like:

(1of3)Google Local:
Starbucks Coffee
1134 Brown St
Dayton, OH 45409
(937) 223-2400

I can foresee myself using this one a lot. It’s yet another “why didn’t I think of that?”

Update 10/11/04: I missed two more features:

  • You can say ‘price ipod 20gb’ and get results from Froogle
  • Something like ‘define ubiquitous’ will search Google’s built-in dictionary

And those examples are actually from Google’s tips sheet (PDF), despite aligning closely with my own biases — and real life, it would seem.

  1. Very cool.

  2. How absolutely delicious.

  3. Now, see … I wouldn’t have thought of describing it that way. But it fits. Wonderfully. Thank you.
