Daring Fireball has a splendid, long article about the solution to a problem that has long plagued me: My Mac OS X 10.3 installation pauses for a long period (at least five minutes - I’ve not timed it) before logging me fully in. It only happens with my account; the account I created for Jennifer behaves just fine.
The only problem is that deleting my font caches as he suggests did not fix the problem for me. Maybe I have some damaged fonts, as Microsoft Word occasionally insinuates in those excruciating moments when I have to fire it up (speaking of delays). Maddeningly, Word always says the problem lies with MS fonts that it installed.
