Moving Preparations

Posted on Thursday, April 21, 2005 in Life

Tomorrow I move.

I’m not ready.

There’s a stack of boxes in the corner of my office, and a bunch of half-packed ones littering the floor. Empty bookshelves line the hall, and I’ve been madly going through the archives of my childhood.

I found two of my old juggling rings (in two different rooms), some old Odyssey albums, books I thought were lost (they were), and an only slightly-working Macintosh Portable.

Jennifer’s flying in tonight, we’re going to have her birthday tomorrow morning, and then drive, drive, drive all day ’till we get to Easley, SC.

That is, if I can get a moving van this afternoon. I reserved a U-Haul truck online. When I stopped by there yesterday to pick up some bubble-wrap and boxes, they told me they had no record of my reservation. I called the main office later, but they told me to call the local office this morning. The fellow I talked to still hasn’t returned my call.

Meanwhile, I’m going to keep packing, and work a bit.

Bring on the comments

  1. Have fun moving! Hopefully you can get a UHaul truck or if not, I guess that will just help you weed out more stuff! Best of Luck.

  2. Ah, the joys of U-Haul… Yeah, it’s not pleasant. I actually hate trying to drive across country with one of those things. Christine and I drove from her parents’ place outside of Pittsburgh, to my parents’ in Mechanicsburg, and then down to Odenton, MD. That was not too much fun.

Moving with a big truck loaded up was MUCH, MUCH easier. Granted, you might not have enough stuff now, but should you decide to move again, at least the two of you will be able to get stuff packed.

I liked ABF’s system, where you basically fill up part of the semi, they wall it off, fill the rest, drive it cross-country, unload their stuff, and then dump it off on you to unload. You really want a ramp or something then.

Hopefully, for me, the DoD will take care of paying for movers, especially since I shouldn’t be lifting the sofa anymore.

Too bad there are no running on the road mobile blog posts. :-(

  3. Heh. The rest of the story is even better. The U-Haul truck was merely waiting at a different location than what my email confirmation told me. Not that the specified store should be able to tell me that fact when I called them or anything, of course.

The truck they gave me had 160,000+ miles on it and sounded like it was falling apart. I drove the U-Haul truck home, had my Dad check it out, and drove it right back to the store.

Budget was 1/3 more expensive (since it was last minute), but at least they had a) a truck ready in less than an hour, b) an agent there waiting for us when we got there (the uhaul place was empty; we had to call around to make the guy come let us give him money), and c) only 25,000 miles on the truck. A much more relaxing vehicle to drive 500 miles carrying one’s possessions (past) and fianceé (future).

    Heather: Thanks! :)

Pete: Sorry, I thought briefly of doing something cool like that, but didn’t think very hard. The trip stretched out into 14 hours as it was. :/ Ugh. Such stress.
