Review: Grandma Peaches’ Café

When moving to a new locale, one must sooner or later explore the local eateries, to see which are best suited for which types of meals: solo lunches, lunches with Jennifer, and dinners.

After my somewhat ill-fated visit to NickHenry’s on Monday (not recounted here yet), I decided to try the comfortably-named Grandma Peaches’ Café here in Powdersville. I had actually intended to come here before, but they’re closed Mondays. I had hoped that the word café hinted at an atmosphere similar to Vicalin’s Coffeehouse in Easley; a place to which I feel very comfortable about bringing my Powerbook.

Grandma Peaches’ does lean farther towards the restaurant side of things, but in a pleasantly cozy, interesting way. I was met at the door and seated in a small booth by a personage who could only be Grandma Peaches herself. The place has country-like decorations, what seems to be a small gift shop in the corner, and a model train running round the perimeter of the ceiling. Very cool.

Every item on the menu seemed to end with the words “and lots of cheese,” but I ordered the Chicken Almond Salad anyway in a fit of moderation, forgetting that salad entrees are generally very big. Fortunately, the meal’s taste matched its size, reinforcing my “Grandma’s kitchen” presupposition of scrumptious food.

Not being very café-like meant there was certainly no wi-fi, which would have been fine had my Cingular account not been disconnected (though quickly reconnected) yesterday, leaving my MEdiaNet wireless data plan in apparent limbo. Which wasn’t Grandma’s fault, of course.

But all in all, a pleasant experience.
